Personality & Traits

General Overview If ever there's a fish out of water, it's Hale. He has spent his life training for the job he wanted more than any other -- flying Black Hawk helicopters. When his father developed pancreatic cancer, he resigned from the military and went home to care for the man who raised him. He understands discipline and commitment. He accepted the risks that come with the job on the day he took the oath and he never looked back.

He has no interest in medals or awards of any kind; the ones that don't go on the uniform, and then only if required, are sent home. At heart, he's a good man with a strong sense of right and wrong. He's a natural leader, easy-going, at home wherever he is, whether that's a mud hut or a mansion and has been called 'unflappable' because of a natural ability to stay calm under pressure. He doesn't feel the need to be the center of attention but isn't shy either. He's independent, resourceful, and doesn't scare easily, if it all. He has a strong need to understand and tends to pursue a subject until he gets the answer.

He can be stubborn and persistent, surrender isn't a word he accepts. He has a good sense of humor, though its maybe a bit dry, and an infectious laugh.

He's most at peace in the sky, when he's flying, and a born animal lover. He's polite to those who are older than him, remembers his manners, but won't back down either. Not easily provoked and while he can defend himself and others, he'd much rather talk his way out of the situation. Jeans are his go-to outfit and he hates getting dressed up/fancy parties.

Details

Born on December 12, 1986 in Owls Head, Maine to Fergus and Elizabeth MacLeod. He comes by his love of flying honestly -- his grandfather, Findlay MacLeod, flew long-range escort in P-51 Mustangs While his father, Fergus, was a commercial airline pilot. He and his mother often flew standby on flights where his Dad was the pilot which gave him exposure to Europe and Great Britain at a young age and all but made it certain that Presque Isle, with its population of less than 9,000 souls, would not hold him for long.

Because he knew what he wanted so young, he's always been a good student. Like all pilots, he's studied radio navigation, meteorology/weather patterns, aviation law, physics and general aircraft knowledge. Through his grandfather, he developed an interest in history, initially focused on pilots in World War 2 but eventually his interests became more wide-ranging which means he nearly always carries around a book on whatever aspect of history interests him at the moment.

When he was ten, he and his grandfather built a working P-51 radio-controlled aircraft and later, a replica of the commercial jet that his father flew. And when he was sixteen, his family took an extended trip to Scotland, the Isle of Skye, to discover what they could of Clan MacLeod.

Throughout those years, one of his best friends was his cousin, Kaitlyn. Born deaf, Hale learned sign language as a way to communicate with her and the two were for a time inseparable. As they grew older, their interests changed with Kaitlyn developing an interest in fashion whereas Hale was obsessed with flying.

Eventually, Kaitlyn and her family moved to New York City to further her education in fashion and design. Her life got busy though they kept in touch as much as they could. The year Hale turned seventeen proved to be a difficult one. First, his grandfather died peacefully in his sleep and then, barely three months later, his mother was killed in a fatal car crash, victim of a drunk driver. His father continued to fly commercially and Hale learned how to cope on his own for extended periods of time. At the age of eighteen, he enrolled in the United States Army under the Civilian Warrant Officer Flight Training Program.

He enlisted and served with distinction until September of 2010 when the military disbanded. He made his way home to discover that his father was dying of pancreatic cancer. He stayed in the family home to take care of his father, the last living member of his immediate family and tried to come to terms with how quickly and completely his life had changed.
